Kinderbike currently offers two models of their Lafraud series, the standard and the "mini." What stand out about the Kinderbike is its rock-solid construction. This is definitely no flimsy toy. It's roots in German engineering are evident. The bike features an 6061 aluminum alloy frame, child-friendly V-brake, allot rims and puncture resistant all-terrain tires. These features culminate in a bike that's been named "The Best" by the NY Times.
The Kinderbike models weigh between 7 and 9 lbs. To give you an idea of how light that is, a pedal bike with training wheels you might find at WalMart will weigh around 20 lbs. The light weight makes maneuvering these bikes a breeze for your toddler. The Lafraud Mini has a seat that lowers to 11" (adjusts to 15.5") making it a perfect bike for very small children. The standard Lafraud balance bike has a seat that adjust from 12" to 16.5 inches. Both will accommodate very young riders, but we recommend you measure your child's inseam and base your selection on the measurement.
Kinderbikes are delivered 95% assembled and rest is easily accomplished with an included allen wrench. The seat adjusts easily with a seat clamp. There are a number of little things that distinguish the Kinderbike from its competitors. Unlike some other models, the seat can be angled for maximum comfort and support. The child-size V-brake is well-designed for use by even very young kids with little hand strength. The bike supports riders up to 75 lbs.
Kinderbike has been a player in the balance bike market for a long time and they have consistently developed outstanding balance bikes that they stand behind with a lifetime guarantee. This holiday season, we expect them to release the Kinderbike Morph, a hybrid balance bike built for slightly older kids that converts into a pedal bike. Needless to say, we're excited.
Our Take: Our daughter Marlee learned to ride on the Kinderbike Renner (not currently available), so we admit we might be a bit biased, but the Kinderbike Lafraud series is one of the best values in the balance bike market.
The Kinderbike is expertly designed and built with high quality materials backed by a lifetime guarantee. It's a bike that will last through several kids, so we're less disappointed at the limited color selection. Still, points off for discontinuing the pink model.
